The Community Services Unit, led by Sergeant Major James L. Sinkler, was implemented to build community relationships through engagement with law enforcement and to enhance the quality of life for all citizens in Sumter. It’s comprised of four sections:
- Crime Prevention
- Public Information
- Business & Downtown District Patrols
- CheckMate Program
Unit officers develop and implement comprehensive crime prevention programs that identify and assess crime risks and formulate positive responses to reduce the incidence of criminal activity. They maintain an active role in community interest groups, such as Neighborhood Watch, and civic organizations with an emphasis on the positive change of police and citizen concerns. These officers build public trust by organizing and attending various community-sponsored events pertaining to public safety concerns or other social events to enhance partnerships with the community.
The unit also keeps the public informed through regular press releases sent to the media and through the department’s social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.
