- Comprehensive and uniform written directives that clearly define authority, performance, and responsibilities
- Reports and analyses to make fact-based and informed management decisions.
- Preparedness to address natural or man-made critical incidents
- Community relationship-building and maintenance
- Independent review by subject matter experts
- Continuous pursuit of excellence through annual reviews and other assessment measures
CALEA Site-Based Assessment
The Sumter Police Department is scheduled for a site-based assessment on February 17–20, 2026, as part of the process to maintain national accreditation. Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the program requires agencies to demonstrate compliance with professional standards in policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
Following four years of annual web-based reviews, CALEA will determine whether the department will maintain its accredited status.
The public is invited to submit comments directly to CALEA through the Sumter Police Department’s website via the CALEA Public Comment Portal.
Written comments may also be mailed to CALEA, 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 160, Gainesville, VA 20155, or submitted at www.calea.org.
